I recently came across Mitsubishi Electric’s new home theater offerings. The two new 1080p home theater projectors they have released into the market for the holidays; the Mitsubishi HC3800 based on DLP technology and the Mitsubishi HC6800 based on LCD technology should give the competition a run for the money. Depending on whether you are in the LCD or DLP camp, there is a Mitsubishi home theater projector for you.

The prices of 1080p projectors have been rapidly coming down with the introduction of the under $1000 projectors Optoma HD20 and Vivitek H1080FD. These two projectors while good are quite bare bones. The Mitsubishi HC3800, at a street price $1495, is priced higher than these models but also offers more features. I have read a couple of reviews where the HD20, H1080FD and HC3800 have been all compared with the Epson Home Cinema 1800. The Epson HC1800, while better than the Optoma and Vivitek, is comparable in price and performance to the HC3800. Specifications for the HC3800 are 1300 Lumens and a contrast ratio of 1:4000

The Mitsubishi HC6800 has a street price of about $2100 and has ultra short throw shift lens which allows for easy installation in small rooms. Even though Mitsubishi has a no online sales policy for this projector, it is being offered for sale on the internet. Specifications for the HC6800 are 1500 Lumens and a contrast ratio of 1:30,000. The HC6800 has an estimated lamp life of up to 4000 hours in low mode and is backed with a 2 year parts and labor warranty.

To summarize, the Mitsubishi HC3800 and HC6800 are two reasonably priced projectors for DLP and LCD technologies with a reasonable set of features. The choice of which one to buy will be dictated by your technology preferences and budget.

Projectors initially found their use in business meetings and then made their way into home entertainment systems. Their prices have come down from drastically in the last few years and at the same time the quality and features have increased. Short Throw Projectors are relatively new variants in this field.

These affordable projectors ensured that small businesses could invest in one without breaking the bank. There was still one issue that of size, both of the projector and the size of the room. Most small businesses did not have large meeting rooms which could make effective use of these projectors. The advent of small projectors with short throw lens addressed these issues.

InFocus is one of the market leaders in digital projectors for business, education and home markets in the US and abroad. Their most recent DLP based short throw portable projectors are ideal for small businesses. They can also be used as a home entertainment projector, if there is a space constraint.

The InFocus IN1500 series (IN1501 and IN1503) addresses the needs of small businesses where meeting spaces are limited or non existent and portability is a high priority. The IN1500 projectors were available beginning Oct 2009.

These projectors are compact, portable, lightweight (4.4 lbs) and have a short throw lens. They offer a contrast ratio of 1:1800 and have a maximum brightness of 3,000 Lumens and native resolutions up to WXGA.

The specifications of the two short throw projectors in the series IN1501 and IN1503 do not vary much and either one of them would fit small businesses needs. The resolutions and the native aspect rations differ.

The street prices for these two short throw projectors are lower than their MSRP. If you had to pick one, it would be the IN1501 since the additional features do not buy you much and it will save you about $150. Amazon offers some of the lowest prices for these projectors.

One of the few LCD projector parts that can be replaced is the projector lamp. LCD projector lamps vary by model, so selection usually depends on the manufacturing company and types such as Incandescent, Compact Fluorescent, Halogen, and HID such as Metal halide and Low/High Pressure Sodium, 3M Projector, Full Spectrum, and Ballasts, to name a few.

The total lamp life is the expected operating time of the projector lamp, which is expressed in terms of hours. Most LCD projectors use a metal halide source with a lamp life of 750 to 4,000 hours or more. Lamp life is not a very useful measurement, since they gradually grow dimmer without burning out and will continue to function even if they are too dim to be considered usable. So the term “peak lamp life” – the time the lamp will last at eighty to ninety percent of total brightness – is commonly used by manufacturers.

In contrast to metal halide lamps that burn with a very white light, halogen lamps burn with a yellowish light, at a steady rate, and have a consistent brightness throughout lamp life; but they only last approximately seventy hours per bulb. Therefore, they are also less expensive.

LCD projector lamps last the longest when the LCD projector is operated in “economy mode,” frequently powered down for cool-down periods, and operated in a clean, fairly dust-free environment. Projectors that are subjected to constant use have the highest probability of lamp failure before the end of the rated hours.
